Green Hydrogen Solutions Announces Groundbreaking Closed-Loop Green Hydrogen Project in the East London Industrial Development Zone
Sandton, South Africa – May, 2025 – Green Hydrogen Solutions (“GHS”) through its project company GHS Green Hydrogen ELIDZ (“GHELIDZ”) launched a Request for Proposal (RFP) process, seeking input from leading equipment suppliers for the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) study of its groundbreaking, fully integrated green hydrogen project.
This pioneering, fully integrated green hydrogen project is distinguished by its innovative closed-loop system design, which will utilise desalinated seawater to produce high-purity green hydrogen for industrial and commercial customers.

A key innovation lies in the project's commitment to circularity and minimal environmental impact. For the first phase of the project transportation of the hydrogen will be enabled by integrated hydrogen internal combustion engine and fuel cell trucks (as they become available) to transport the hydrogen to customers. The brine concentrate resulting from the desalination process, often considered a waste stream, will be directly supplied to a partnered sodium-ion battery research and development project. The only emission from the core hydrogen plant will be some oxygen, which will be vented safely into the atmosphere.
"For green hydrogen projects to succeed by lowering the price of green hydrogen relative to competing alternatives, a novel approach enabling integrated systems that reduce carbon emissions while supporting fuel switching is required. This project will demonstrate how integrated, circular systems can create value while minimizing environmental impact," says Ebrahim Takolia, project developer and CEO of Green Hydrogen Solutions.
The green hydrogen produced will support the decarbonization efforts of various sectors in close proximity to the hydrogen production plant, enabling industrial players to remain globally competitive as the world moves to carbon border adjustment mechanisms that will price carbon into production costs.
The project will, using GHS machine learning (ML) model, significantly increase electrolyser utilisation rates, which reduces the price of the green hydrogen produced, by supplementing base electricity supply with strategically procured surplus grid electricity creating a new revenue stream for Independent Power Producers from kilowatts that would otherwise be curtailed. The ML model plays a crucial role by forecasting electricity production and predicting price fluctuations in the day-ahead and other electricity trading markets, which will be enabled by a fully liberalized, competitive domestic day-ahead Market envisaged by the South African Grid Code. In essence, green hydrogen’s biggest price determinant is the price of renewable electricity, and the ML model optimises the use of low priced electricity while at the same time improving electrolyser utilisation rates.

Green hydrogen is a clean fuel produced by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using electrolysis powered by renewable energy sources.
